Apple’s iPhone… the nail in the coffin of Apple Computer, Inc.
Over at the NYT, Randall Stross gets his iUnderwear in an iWad over the iPhone (registration required, blah blah blah). Although I am quickly becoming an Apple fanboy with the recent purchase of my Core2 Duo Macbook Pro (or, as the Apple fanboys like to say, a C2DMBP), Stross brings it home with his rant on Apple’s collusion with the record and movie industry regarding DRM.
Add to Apple’s stubborn stance on DRM (Fairplay, yeah, right) the lack of third-party applications on the iPhone (and Steve’s remarkably stupid reasoning behind that fact — don’t want to take down the Cingular network… sheesh), not actually running OS X, no over-the-air or WiFi synchronization, and the apparent coolness of the LG KE850… yeah, you get the idea. Fanboys (and girls) around the globe are wishing Steve had never dropped this goodness/badness upon us.
Along with dropping “Computer” from their name, apparently Apple, Inc., has decided to drop their counterculture, forward-thinking ideology in favor of the dystopian “1984” they once championed against.
Where’s the lady in the red shorts with the sledgehammer now?
