Bigger must be better

Tuesday 12 December 2006 - Filed under General

Take a look at this picture below. I bought this bottle without even looking at the big ‘ol banner at the top declaring my good fortune. See? 25% more! 25% more than what? Ah… 100 oz is 25% more than 80 oz. Good grief.

I first noticed this about a year ago. I wasn’t sure whether to be insulted, or whether to feel sorry for the American public that this was deemed a worthy packaging technique.
It’s interesting to think about the evolution of product packaging. It was what–about 10 or 15 years ago?–that companies started including banners across the side of some packages claiming “25% more FREE!!” or the like. Now comes this, where it’s just “25% bigger” than another size they offer. Eventually, we consumers will become oblivious to the banners at all, and they’ll have to do something else to try to catch our eye.
